About Chelsea

Chelsea is the farthest west we go on a regular basis, about thirty-five minutes down I-94 from the shop, and the drive is worth it because the town sends us steady work. The Chelsea Milling Company's clock tower and silos sit right on Main Street, and the Jiffy Mix plant has been the economic anchor since the 1900s, long before the Purple Rose Theatre put the town on the map for weekend visitors. Chelsea Hospital on the east side is the other big employer, and the Waterloo Recreation Area, the largest state park in the Lower Peninsula, wraps around the north and west. The downtown is a well-kept 1890s–1920s business district, and the residential blocks off Main Street and Middle Street are the same vintage. Subdivisions like Chelsea Fairways and Heritage Pointe went in during the 1990s and 2000s on the east and south sides, drawing Ann Arbor and Jackson commuters. The town is popular with retirees too, and the Chelsea Retirement Community is one of the largest senior campuses in the county.

What Chelsea houses need from an HVAC company

The in-town housing is dominated by 1890s–1940s two-stories, foursquares and bungalows on fieldstone or early block basements with plaster walls and ductwork retrofitted into a house that was designed for a coal furnace or stoves. Flues in these homes are often unlined brick, and we see a lot of 80 percent furnaces that have been venting into a chimney that should have been relined years ago. The post-war ring along McKinley Street and Freer Road is 1950s–70s ranches and capes, some on slabs, with electric baseboard still present in a few. Chelsea Fairways, Heritage Pointe and the other 1990s–2010s subdivisions are colonials and ranches on full basements with builder-grade 80 percent furnaces and single-stage air conditioners that are now hitting replacement age. Outside the city on Werkner, Waterloo and Cavanaugh Lake Roads, we see lakefront cottages that were winterized, farmhouses with multiple additions, and newer acreage homes on propane and well water.

Weather and the equipment it tests

Chelsea is high and open compared with the river towns to the east, and it gets more wind and a bit more snow than Ypsilanti, with polar vortex nights that run a few degrees colder. The lakes in the Waterloo Recreation Area and around Cavanaugh Lake add summer humidity for the homes closest to them. Heavy tree cover downtown and on the older residential streets shades roofs in July, while the newer subdivisions on the east side have little mature canopy yet.

Local details we plan around

  • Chelsea is in Consumers Energy gas territory rather than DTE, which matters for rebate programs and for who we call about a meter or service line issue.
  • Electric service is split between Consumers Energy and DTE depending on the exact address, and homes just outside town may be on one for gas and the other for electric.
  • The city runs its own water system from wells, and the water is hard enough that we recommend annual flushing on tank water heaters here.
  • Outside the city limits, propane furnaces and water heaters are routine, and propane conversions and regulator problems are a normal part of our Chelsea calls.
  • Unlined brick chimneys in the historic neighborhoods are the single most common venting problem we find during furnace replacements in town.
  • Permits for city addresses go through Chelsea's building department, while Lima, Sylvan and Lyndon Township addresses go through Washtenaw County.

On June 24 around 3:00 p.m., our A/C stopped working. I called several A/C repair companies and they all told me that it would take from several days to a few weeks to come out. Then I ran across Temprasure. I spoke to Al, and he came out the same day and diagnosed my 26-year-old A/C unit. The bad news is that it could not be repaired. The good news is that I purchased a new A/C unit and his team installed the new unit with no issues. Everything Al said about the installation experience actually occurred as he stated, from the delivery date of the unit to the time it took to install it. Not to mention the prices were more than reasonable.

Our heat went out, called Alfred, the owner, and he was here within the hour to tell us that we needed a new furnace, because the heat exchanger had holes and was leaking gas! He returned 2 days later to replace the unit; it was a lengthy process, about 10 hours, but it was well worth it! Very professional, told us exactly what we needed, even encouraged us to get a second opinion, which we did, and they said the same thing! So we went with Al!

My elderly non-English-speaking parents needed their water heater replaced and Temprasure did not leave until they made sure my parents were satisfied and happy to have hot water once again. They were very patient with them and did not abandon them even though I know sometimes it's hard to deal with my non-speaking parents. They checked back with us a few days later to make sure everything was still working good. I definitely would recommend this company.

Questions from Chelsea homeowners

Do you serve all of Chelsea?

Yes. Chelsea is 25 miles from our shop, about a 36-minute drive, which puts every address in 48118 inside our 20-mile service area. We run to Downtown Chelsea, Chelsea Fairways, Heritage Pointe, Old US-12 corridor and everywhere in between.

How fast can you get to Chelsea for a no-heat or no-cooling call?

Usually the same day, often within a few hours. We are open 24 hours and prioritize homes with no heat in winter and no cooling in summer. Tell us when you call if there are infants, elderly family members or medical needs in the house and we move you up the list.

Is there a travel charge for Chelsea?

No. The dispatch fee is the same flat amount everywhere inside our radius, and it is credited toward any repair you approve. Replacement estimates in Chelsea are free.

What gas and electric utilities serve Chelsea?

Consumers Energy in the city and most of the surrounding area, with propane on outlying roads for natural gas and Consumers Energy in much of the city, DTE Energy on some outlying roads for electric. That matters for rebates on high-efficiency furnaces, heat pumps and smart thermostats, which we can walk you through when you are replacing equipment.

What kind of homes do you work on in Chelsea?

Mostly the 1890s–1920s village homes and 1990s–2010s subdivisions on the edges, along with everything older and newer.

Do you handle rentals and new-home inspections in Chelsea?

Yes. We coordinate with tenants and send findings to the owner, and we do pre-purchase HVAC inspections for buyers inside the inspection contingency window, with a written report you can use to negotiate.
